S h e l l e y M c M a i n Based in Toronto, Canada, I work as a senior scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and as an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. My professional focus is psychotherapy research, with particular attention to DBT, personality disorders, and trauma. My introduction to DBT dates back to the early 1990s, when I was working with highly complex, multi-diagnostic patients. Encountering Marsha Linehan’s work marked a turning point, as the model stood out for its clarity, compassion, and clinical relevance. As a clinician-scientist, I am especially interested in understanding what works, for whom, and how treatments can be improved, scaled, and made more accessible. I am proud to have contributed to research that helped challenge stigma around borderline personality disorder and demonstrated that effective treatment is achievable.
